About this dish

This Turon with Honey is a delightful twist on the classic Filipino banana spring roll. Instead of the usual caramelized sugar coating, we drizzle golden honey for a floral sweetness that complements the creamy saba bananas and crisp lumpia wrappers.

Each bite is a tutti-frutti, whimsical treat – almost magical, especially since I always believe everything tastes better with a little purple magic!

Ingredients

UK and US measurements are both included for every recipe.

Saba bananas (or very firm regular bananas)

fruit

6 pieces

Canned jackfruit, packed in syrup

fruit

200 g

Imperial measurement: 7 oz

Lumpia wrappers or spring roll wrappers, frozen, thawed

other

12 sheets

Pure honey, for drizzling

liquid

60 ml (4 tbsp)

Imperial measurement: 1/4 cup

Water, for sealing wrappers

liquid

60 ml

Imperial measurement: 1/4 cup

Oil (canola or peanut, for frying)

fat

500 ml (approx.)

Imperial measurement: 2 cups

Method

1

Prepare the bananas and jackfruit

5 mins

Peel the saba bananas and cut each in half crosswise, then each halve lengthwise into two wedges. Slice the canned jackfruit into thin strips about 1/4 inch (6 mm) wide.

2

Wrap the turon

10 mins

Separate the lumpia wrappers carefully (keep them covered with a damp cloth to prevent drying). On a work surface, lay one wrapper in a diamond orientation. Place two banana wedges and a few jackfruit strips lengthwise near the bottom corner. Fold the bottom corner over the filling, then fold in the sides, and roll tightly. Moisten the top corner with water to seal. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

3

Heat the oil

3 mins

In a deep frying pan or wok, heat about 2 inches (5 cm) of oil to 175-180°C (350°F). The oil is ready when a cube of bread dropped in sizzles and turns golden in about 15 seconds.

4

Fry the turon

5 mins

Carefully slide 3-4 rolls into the hot oil, seam side down for a moment to stick the seal. Fry, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crisp on all sides – about 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain.

5

Drizzle with honey

2 mins

Arrange the fried turon on a serving plate and liberally drizzle (or brush) with honey. Serve warm. If you like, a tiny pinch of salt over the honey enhances the sweetness with a lovely counterpoint.

Tips

  • Use fully ripe saba bananas: they are sweeter and creamier when fried.
  • Keep unused lumpia wrappers covered with a damp kitchen towel to prevent them from drying and cracking.
  • Don't overfill – using just two banana wedges and a few jackfruit strips per roll ensures the wrappers fry evenly and seals stay closed.
  • If the honey is too thick, warm it briefly in the microwave (about 10 seconds) to make it more dripable. A pinch of flaky sea salt on top is beautiful contrast.

Serving suggestions

  • Serve the turon hot, drizzled with extra honey if desired. They pair wonderfully with a scoop of vanilla or ube ice cream (yes, purple friend!) or a cup of black coffee or warm ginger tea.
  • For.
  • For a festive merienda platter, provide small dipping bowls of honey and sweet coconut cream.
