About this dish

This comforting dhal curry is a staple of Indian home cooking, where creamy lentils simmer with aromatic spices. Here, we add tender chunks of breadfruit, which soak up the flavors and add a hearty, potato-like texture.

It's a satisfying, plant-based meal that's both nourishing and full of soul.

Method

1

Prep the Dhal

10 minutes

Rinse the toor dal under running water until the water runs clear. Soak it in water for 30 minutes if you have time – this helps it cook faster and more evenly. If you're using a pressure cooker, you can skip the soaking.

2

Peel and Cube Breadfruit

10 minutes

Peel the breadfruit with a sharp knife, removing the tough green skin. Cut it into bite-sized cubes, about 1½ inches. Set aside.

3

Sauté the Tadka Base

7 minutes

Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed pot or pressure cooker. Add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds. When they start to pop, add the curry leaves and chopped onion. Sauté the onion until it turns golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.

4

Add Tomatoes and Spices

3 minutes

Add the chopped tomato and cook for a few minutes until soft. Then add the turmeric powder, coriander powder, and red chili powder (if using). Stir well and cook for 1 minute until the spices are fragrant.

5

Cook the Dhal and Breadfruit

2 minutes

Drain the soaked dhal and add it to the pot along with the breadfruit cubes. Add salt and the water. Stir everything together.

6

Pressure Cook or Simmer

35 minutes

If using a pressure cooker, close the lid and cook on high pressure for 3 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally. If cooking on the stovetop, cover and simmer for 30-35 minutes, until the dhal is mushy and the breadfruit is tender.

7

Garnish and Serve

2 minutes

Once cooked, then serve hot.

Tips

  • If breadfruit is not available, you can substitute with potatoes or taro root, but the flavor will be different. Breadfruit has a slight nuttiness and holds its shape perfectly.
  • For a richer flavor, you can finish the dish with a tadka of ghee (if not vegan) or oil—heat a small pan, add a teaspoon of mustard seeds, a few dried red chilies, and a pinch of asafoetida, then pour this sizzling mixture over the curry before serving.
  • This curry tastes even better the next day, as the flavors meld together. It also freezes well for up to a month.

Serving suggestions

  • Serve this dhal curry hot with steamed basmati rice, roti, or naan. It also pairs nicely with a side of pickles or papad. Enjoy!
